Laurent Fabius participates in the 70th UN General Assembly in New York from September 26 to October 1. He is accompanied by Annick Girardin, Minister of State for Development and Francophony. During the week, the minister will participate in a large number of multilateral meetings and will have numerous bilateral meetings:
1 - Laurent Fabius’s priority is to mobilize the international community in order to ensure the success of the Paris Climate Conference, which will take place from November 30 to December 11. He wanted to organize a working dinner on this topic with the UN secretary-general. He is going to take part in numerous meetings with a large number of states to discuss the main aspects of the fight against climate disruption, including the issues of security, energy supply and technology transfer. The adoption of a new development agenda for 2030 on September 27 should make it possible to redefine the models for growth and development, while giving priority to environmental and climate issues.
2 – The fight against terrorism and the crises is a key theme during the week. Laurent Fabius participated yesterday in a meeting chaired by Barack Obama on the fight against terrorism. During his exchanges over the course of the week, he will call for the swift implementation of the commitments made at the conference on the victims of ethnic and religious violence on September 8. He will participate on september, 30 in a high-level meeting on the strengthening of cooperation on migration and the flow of refugees, organized by Ban Ki-moon.
The minister will attend several events focusing on the crucial revival of the Middle East peace process as well as the implementation of the Vienna agreement on the Iranian nuclear program. On september 30, he will also join the UN Secretary-General and his American counterpart in convening the International Support Group for Lebanon to support the Lebanese government’s efforts to end the crisis there.
Laurent Fabius will take part in several events on Africa, attended notably by Malian President Boubacar Keita on 1st of october. The aim will be to consolidate progress on the ground – in Mali with the implementation of the peace agreements of May 15 and June 20, and in the Central African Republic ahead of the elections to be held by the end of the year.
3- To improve the effectiveness of the UN, which marks its 70 birthday this year, the minister and his Mexican counterpart will chair a meeting on the initiative presented two years ago by the French President whereby members of the Security Council would refrain from exercising their veto powers in cases of mass atrocities.
He also takes part today in a high-level meeting on the death penalty, to underscore France’s commitment to its universal abolition, and will meet with the representatives of major NGOs working on human rights issues.
4- Finally, Laurent Fabius is attending several events to promote France’s economic assets and investment opportunities in our country, including the inauguration of “Best of France” in Times Square, which took place on 26 september.
