UN – Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne to attend the virtual Security Council meeting on multilateralism (7 May 2021)

Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne, Minister of State for Tourism, French Nationals Abroad and Francophonie, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will participate virtually in today’s UN Security Council meeting on multilateralism. This ministerial session will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, as China holds the Security Council’s rotating presidency for May.

The Minister will reaffirm France’s determination to defend the multilateral method of conducting international relations and to promote concrete solutions to multilateral reform. That is the goal set by members of the Alliance for Multilateralism launched in 2019 by Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian and his German counterpart.

Mr. Lemoyne will emphasize that in order to be effective, a multilateral system must be based on compliance with international law, good governance of international organizations, and a spirit of cooperation. It must also be able to reform itself. That is why France supports Security Council reform and proposes to limit veto use in mass atrocities. In response to the health crisis, he will reiterate our support for reforming the multilateral health architecture and our commitment to the ACT Accelerator and COVAX initiatives to accelerate access to tools to combat Covid-19.
