United Nations – Adoption of resolution 2480 (2019) – Renewal of MINUSMA’s mandate (28 June 2019)

France welcomes the unanimous adoption on Friday, June 28, 2019, of UNSCR 2480, renewing for one year the mandate of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA).

Resolution 2480 stresses the need for urgent progress toward implementing the peace agreement, with specific deliverables expected over the coming year and a clear message: Those who obstruct the implementation of the agreement will be liable to sanctions.

The Security Council also draws the consequences of the deteriorating situation in central Mali. The resolution calls on the Malian authorities to immediately implement a comprehensive strategy to put an end to the violence and to restore state authority and encourages MINUSMA to strengthen its efforts in this area, which is now the mission’s second most important strategic priority.

France reaffirms its full support for MINUSMA’s work and pays tribute to the commitment of the peacekeepers operating in a challenging environment who pay a heavy price. MINUSMA is a key component of the international presence in Mali; its mandate complements that of the G5 Sahel Joint Force, France’s Operation Barkhane and the European mission, EUTM.
