United Nations – International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (17 May 2018)

France is taking concrete action within the framework of our bilateral relations and within the multilateral forums. As a member of the LGBT Core Group at the UN as well as the Equal Rights Coalition launched in Montevideo in 2016, our country has worked hard to ensure that this issue is included in the agendas of international forums. Progress has been made, including within the framework of the UN. We notably pay tribute to the work of Victor Madrigal-Borloz, Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

LGBTI persons all over the world still suffer violence, discrimination and violations of their fundamental rights. In more than 70 countries, homosexual relations are considered to be offences or crimes, punishable by prison sentences, or even the death penalty. France remains concerned about serious violations of the rights of LGBTI persons, notably the crackdowns and incidences of torture in several countries.

In this context, France will continue to work tirelessly to ensure equality in dignity and rights for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It is determined to continue its efforts to ensure the universal decriminalization of homosexuality. It will also continue to lend direct support to actors on the ground and human rights activists, including LGBTI rights defenders

As a symbol of its strong commitment to the rights of LGBTI persons, France will host, for the first time, the Gay Games in Paris from August 4 to 12. 15,000 participants and 40,000 visitors are expected to attend the 10th edition of this event, which will take place at 70 venues in Paris and Île-de-France.

On this global day of action, our diplomatic network will host or will be involved in joint events in several countries.
