United Nations – Appointment of Horst Köhler (August 16, 2017)

France welcomes the appointment on August 16 of Horst Köhler as Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara.

It wishes him every success and expresses its gratitude to his predecessor, Christopher Ross, for his positive contribution to the search for a peaceful solution to the situation. Horst Köhler, former President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, was president of the Federal Republic of Germany from 2004 to 2010 and has extensive international and multilateral experience.

As reaffirmed by UNSCR 2351 of April 28, 2017, the UN-led political process must be resumed without delay in order to find a just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution. France considers the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco in 2007 to be a serious and credible basis for a negotiated solution.

We assure Horst Köhler of our full support in accomplishing his mission.
