UN – World Humanitarian Day (August 19, 2017)

On World Humanitarian Day, France applauds the commitment of humanitarian workers who often place their own lives at risk to provide assistance to populations in need.

To help the nearly 128 million people in need of humanitarian assistance worldwide, these workers play a vital role, working courageously and with dedication to ease the suffering of victims of armed conflicts, natural disasters, and other emergency situations.

Their protection, safety, and the fight against impunity for acts committed against them are a priority for France. We remain committed, particularly within the UN, to enforcing international humanitarian law, protecting civilians in conflicts through secure and unfettered humanitarian access, and enabling humanitarian workers to safely carry out their missions.

Jean-Yves Le Drian has invited Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, to be the guest of honor at Ambassadors’ Week, running from August 28 to September 1. On that occasion, Mr. Maurer will have discussions with the ambassadors meeting in Paris.
