France joins in the celebration of World Food Day, devoted this year to the theme of “Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty.”
Social protection measures have a key role to play in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By helping households to address social risks such as illness and old age, they help to reduce poverty and ensure food security.
This day also marks the 70th anniversary of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). Almost 800 million people still suffer from hunger around the world and almost one billion are in situations of extreme poverty.
