UN – Appointment of Noeleen Heyzer as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Myanmar (Oct. 26, 2021)

France welcomes the appointment of Dr. Noeleen Heyzer as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Myanmar. It offers her its best wishes for success and assures her of its full support. It underscores the importance of guaranteeing her safe, unrestricted countrywide access as well as her ability to speak to all parties as part of her important mission.

France reiterates its calls for a halt to the violence perpetrated by Burmese security forces following the coup d’état on February 1. It demands the immediate unconditional release of all individuals being held arbitrarily and calls for full compliance with the will of the Burmese people, as expressed during the general elections on November 8, 2020.

A political dialogue that includes all stakeholders, including the National Unity Government, the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw and other pro-democracy forces is the only way to end the crisis in that country.
