The 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly
The 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly opens at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on 12 September 2017 with Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovakia, as president.
The annual general debate, during which Heads of State and Government and other high-level national representatives meet to present their views on major global issues, will open on Tuesday, 19 September, and will conclude on Monday 25 September.
Themes of the 72nd General Assembly
Each regular session is themed. The chosen theme for 2017 is: "Focusing on People: Striving for Peace and a Decent Life for All on a Sustainable Planet".
In addition to this theme, the priority subjects include:
- the importance of prevention and mediation in the maintenance of peace,
- the issue of migration,
- the objectives of sustainable development and the fight against climate change with a follow-up to the Paris agreement,
- respect for human rights.
