The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs welcomes the decision by UNESCO to inscribe two French nominations on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting in Port Louis on 28 November 2018.

The skills related to perfume in Pays de Grasse: the cultivation of perfume plants, the knowledge and processing of natural raw materials, and the art of perfume composition” nomination covers all the processes relating to the creation of perfumes which bring together growers, experts and workers responsible for transforming the raw materials and the perfume makers in Pays de Grasse.

The art of dry stone walling, knowledge and techniques” is a transnational nomination bringing together France, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland. Dry stone walls, which use no other materials than stone, have shaped the various landscapes and include practices which have been used since pre-historical times and are still used today.

These inscriptions recognize and showcase the knowledge handed down through many generations by various communities. Intangible cultural heritage is an important factor in maintaining cultural diversity and France welcomes UNESCO’s work in this field.
