Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will conduct a visit to the Basque Country on Friday, February 10.
He will first of all visit the Biarritz Le Phare golf course in order to meet with the signatories of the “Biarritz – Golf destination” destination contract. The destination contract initiative, created by the government, is aimed at mobilizing actors on the ground to strengthen the development of high-value tourist attractions and facilities. 22 destination contracts in mainland France and overseas territories have been signed since 2014.
The minister will then visit the Bellevue de Biarritz site to meet with elected officials and local stakeholders in the accommodation, business tourism and spa tourism sectors. He will notably discuss with them the challenges of air and land-based transport connections which contributed to a sharp increase in the number of visitors last year.
Lastly, he will visit Bayonne to meet with the municipal authorities and the teams from the sub-prefecture in order to take stock of the arrangements for the summer festivals held there which attract more than a million visitors every year.
The minister will speak to the press at 11:45 am in order to reaffirm the goals of his visit. He will announce the initial official figures regarding the number of tourists who visited France in 2016. He will talk about the implementation of the decisions adopted at the Interministerial Tourism Committee meeting on November 7, 2016, and the second annual tourism conference on November 17.
