Nuclear Weapons – Deposit of French draft of Fissile Material Cut-off Treaty (April 10, 2015)

As President Hollande announced on February 19, France presented an ambitious, realistic and verifiable draft of the cut-off treaty (FMCT) banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other explosive devices.

Deposited on April 9 at the Geneva Disarmament Conference, this text is being presented today. It will also be submitted as a working document to the 9th Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in New York, running from April 27 to May 22.

This draft reflects France’s concrete commitment to nuclear disarmament. Beginning negotiations on this draft is an important step toward that objective and is a priority for France.
