Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will meet this afternoon with Lassina Zerbo, Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO).
This treaty, which prohibits all nuclear test explosions, is one of the key instruments of the international disarmament and non-proliferation regime. France was the first nuclear-weapon state to ratify the treaty, together with the United Kingdom, in 1998. Since that time it has been calling for its universalization and for its swiftest possible entry into force. Laurent Fabius and Lassina Zerbo will discuss the strategy to be implemented in order to hasten this prospect.
A few weeks after the CTBTO monitoring system detected a new North Korean nuclear test, France reaffirms its support for the critical work of this organization.
