Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, spoke by phone yesterday with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, in order to review preparations for the meeting of foreign affairs ministers in Brussels on March 23 and 24.
The minister underscored the importance of this meeting, which should provide an opportunity for the allies to launch preparations for the next NATO meeting of heads of state and government. In this context, he reaffirmed France’s commitment to the conclusion of the strategic reflection launched within the alliance in December 2019, at the initiative of France and Germany and within the framework of the conclusions of the group of experts discussed by the foreign affairs ministers in December. In this context, the minister discussed France’s attachment to continuing efforts by the European allies to consolidate a renewed and rebalanced trans-Atlantic alliance.
In addition to the preparations for the next NATO summit, the minister and the secretary general discussed the key issues at stake for the forthcoming ministerial meeting, including Afghanistan, Russia and arms control.
