Jordan – Women’s rights - Repeal of a criminal provision (1 August 2017)

On August 1, Jordan’s legislative assembly repealed a Jordanian criminal provision allowing rapists to evade criminal prosecution if they married their victims.

We welcome this decision which represents an important step forward for women’s rights.

The mobilization and work of civil society organizations and women’s rights activists in Jordan were key to bringing about this repeal.

France remains committed to combating all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination. It defends women’s rights, independence and freedom everywhere and works to combat all forms of violence against them.
