On September 13, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian met with Christophe Deloire, secretary general of Reporters sans frontières (RSF).
They reviewed the state of press freedom around the world, as well as several individual cases of journalists who have been jailed for their activities. Ahead of the minister’s trip to Ankara, they had an in-depth discussion on the situation of Loup Bureau.
RSF’s priorities and initiatives were also addressed in relation to the upcoming UN General Assembly. Mr. Le Drian expressed France’s support for the RSF initiative to create an ad hoc mechanism to protect reporters that would be placed under the UN secretary general. That proposal is currently being discussed with our UN partners with the aim of making it a concrete reality.
Media pluralism, the right to inform and be informed, and the ability to express critical viewpoints are vital to democratic debate. Defending the freedom of the press and the freedom of expression are foreign policy priorities for France.
