Presence of Harlem Désir at commemorative ceremonies marking the liberation of Buchenwald (April 12 2015)

On April 12, European affairs minister Harlem Désir will represent France at ceremonies commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Buchenwald. With nearly 250,000 deportees from across Europe, Buchenwald was one of the largest concentration camps. Mr. Désir will be accompanied by a delegation of representatives from institutions that preserve the memory of the deportation and civil society figures.

The first part of the ceremony will be held at the German National Theater in Weimar and will be attended by 250 former prisoners and their families, as well as by Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament; Bodo Ramelow, minister-president of Thuringia; and representatives of the federal government.

Mr. Désir will then pay tribute to all the victims by laying a wreath at the former camp’s muster ground.
