International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists – Statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Marc Ayrault (November 2, 2016)

On the occasion of the third Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship ceremony, I want to pay tribute to the memory of these journalists who paid for their commitment to press freedom with their lives.

For France, defending the freedom of the press and the freedom of expression is a foreign policy priority.

At its initiative, on November 26, 2013, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the security of journalists that calls on States to prevent violence against them and to fight against impunity for the perpetrators of such violence.

November 2 was the date chosen as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists as a tribute to Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon. France is committed to establishing the truth in that tragic case and notes that its legal authorities sent requests for mutual legal assistance to the Malian authorities.
