An international conference on respect for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex persons (LGBTI) was being hosted by Uruguay and the Netherlands in Montevideo from July 12 to 15.

The ambassador of France to Uruguay read a message from Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, in which the minister underscored France’s determination to combat all forms of discrimination and violence related to sexual orientation and gender identity.

France welcomes the launch of the “coalition for equal rights” during this conference. While the terrorist attacks in Orlando were targeted against individuals based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, and same-sex relationships are still considered a disease, an offence or a crime in many countries, France calls on the international community to ensure equality in dignity and rights for all individuals.
