France applauds the bestowal of the Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders on Mohamed Zaree of Egypt.
Each year, the Martin Ennals Award is given out by a jury composed of 10 NGOs to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding merit in defending human rights. It bears the name of a former secretary general of Amnesty International. This award pays tribute to the daily commitment of those on whom it is bestowed.
Mr. Zaree, the Egypt Country Director of the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies, has shown unwavering courage in advocating for human rights and defending the activities of NGOs in Egypt.
We also hail the two finalists for this award:
- Karla Avelar, founder and president of COMCAVIS TRANS, El Salvador’s first organization of transgender women; and
- the Cambodian group Freethe5KH, bringing together five human rights defenders (Ny Sokha, Yi Soksan, Nay Vanda, Ny Chakrya, and Lim Mony), who are awaiting trial after 427 days of pre-trial detention.
