Amnesty International’s annual report on the death penalty notes that there were 1,032 confirmed executions worldwide in 2016, a figure higher than the annual average for the past 10 years, and a very sharp increase in death sentences.

France is concerned by the large number of executions, particularly in China, Iran, and Saudi Arabia.

France reiterates its unwavering opposition to the death penalty everywhere and in all circumstances.

It calls on all the nations that still apply this unjust, inhuman, and ineffective punishment to establish a moratorium on the death penalty with a view to its definitive abolition, and urges the United States in particular to continue moving toward abolition.
