Health in the Sahel – Meeting between Laurent Fabius and Bill Gates and signing of an agreement between the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the French Development Agency and the GAVI Alliance (Paris, June 25, 2015)

Laurent Fabius received Bill Gates, Co-Chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. They notably discussed the challenges of development, health coverage in the countries of the South and the fight against climate disruption.

Laurent Fabius then presided over the signing of an innovative partnership worth €100 million between the Gates Foundation, the French Development Agency and the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) aimed at increasing immunization coverage in 6 French-speaking countries in the Sahel region: Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal and Chad.

This tripartite financing agreement will facilitate the introduction of new vaccines, the renewal of existing programs and the strengthening of health systems in the countries concerned, where immunization coverage has significantly improved over the past 10 years but the proportion of children who have received a full course of basic immunizations remains inadequate.
