On 4 and 5 July 2019, the G7 Development and Education Ministers will be meeting in Paris. These meetings, preparing the Biarritz Summit, will draw on the expertise of international organisations and the presence of representatives from non G7 member states and civil society, in line with the desire of the French G7 Presidency to open up the G7.

The fight against inequality, which is the priority of the French G7 Presidency, will be the common thread running through the work, with particular emphasis on gender equality and significant priority given to Africa.

4 July: two parallel sessions

Mr Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will host the G7 Development Ministers, the G5 Sahel countries (Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger) and major international organizations in the development field (United Nations, World Bank, African Development Bank, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, World Health Organization). Together, they will discuss fragility issues in the Sahel region and propose joint, concerted solutions to address the current emergency in the region, as well as long-term actions.

Meanwhile, Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister for National Education and Youth, will host the G7 Education Ministers. Three guest States – Argentina, Estonia and Singapore – have been invited to take part in the discussions, ensuring continuity with recent multilateral work (2018 G20).

4 July: G7 Declarations

> G7 Declaration - Financing for Sustainable Development Declaration

> G7 Declaration - Tackling fragilities and preventing crises in developing countries

> Joint Paris G7 / G5 Sahel communiqué

> Framework on decent job creation for rural youth in the Sahel

5 July: First Joint G7 Development and Education Ministers Meeting

For the first time ever, G7 Development Ministers and Education ministers will meet for a joint working day at UNESCO on 5 July 2019. When the international community adopted the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it took responsibility for achieving the goal of quality education for all. At UNESCO, the lead UN agency for education, the G7 Ministers will reaffirm their commitment to this subject.

The fight against inequality, particularly in Africa, will be tackled from two standpoints: education for girls and technical and vocational training.

5 July: G7 Declarations

> G7 Declaration - Gender at the Center Initiative

> G7 Commitment Charter on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) cooperation with developing countries

> Joint communiqué of the G7 Ministers of Education and International Development : Tackling inequality in developing countries through gender-responsive education and quality technical and vocational education and training

Interview: Cyrille Pierre, Director of Sustainable Development

Cyrille Pierre, the Ministry’s Director of Sustainable Development reviews the key issues of the G7 Development and Education Ministers Meeting.

Commitment to sustainable development and gender equality

Environmental and social responsibility is a key priority for the French G7 Presidency. Combating all forms of inequality, limiting the environmental impact of the event, and creating sustainable momentum, are priorities for the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, which will seek to ensure lasting implementation of the best practices put in place by the Ministry and its contractors.

The G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Dinard and Saint-Malo was certified ISO20121 and received the AFNOR “Equality at a major event” label. A similar initiative has been taken for the G7 Development and Education Ministers Meeting on 4 and 5 July.
