When sport merges with culture to show solidarity among French-speaking nations, the result is Les Jeux de la Francophonie (The Francophone Games), a fantastic event with over 3,000 artists and athletes from around the world.
Art, sports and the French language
Held every four years in the year following the Summer Olympic Games, the Jeux de la Francophonie provide an opportunity for young people from French-speaking countries to gather for sporting and cultural competitions in a spirit of friendship.
French, as the shared language between the participating countries, encourages dialogue between participants and with the public. As one of the official Olympic languages, French is serving the two universal languages, sport and culture, to strengthen the links created by these events.
La Francophonie comprises 84 Member or Associate Member Nations and governments, brought together to share a common language, French, and driven by a founding principle: cooperation and solidarity.
The Jeux de la Francophonie are like la Francophonie itself: a space for sharing and exchanges, in a spirit of solidarity between all countries. They are a special occasion for French-speaking nations, which meet up in a peaceful setting.
Within the framework of sustainable development, the Jeux de la Francophonie, with the help of cooperation and partnership, help to educate young people by setting up many training programmes covering all areas linked to the organization of the Games: the tourism industry, hotels, broadcasting, health, security and sport.
The Jeux de la Francophonie are also drivers for large-scale projects involving the construction or renovation of sporting and cultural facilities, roads and accommodation in the host city. These long-term facilities help to change the landscape, improve citizens’ lives and develop the tourism sector, especially when the Games are held in developing countries.
