Joint press release by the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food welcome the re-election of Ms Monique Éloit, a veterinary doctor, as Director General of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on 28 May 2021.

In her first term as OIE Director General, Ms Éloit updated the tools enabling the Organisation to better address future health concerns and helped reform internal governance to achieve better transparency and greater inclusion of member States and partners.

The OIE, which has 182 Member States and has been located in Paris since its creation in 1924, is the international organization responsible for improving animal health worldwide in order to preserve animal production, secure the international trade of live animals and food of animal origin, and protect human health with regard to diseases common to both animals and humans. These are strategically important issues, as the COVID-19 pandemic has reminded us.

For many years, the OIE has been involved in the “One Health” approach, which highlights the interdependence between human, animal and ecosystem health. In particular, it aims to prevent and address health crises of animal origin. In this regard, the OIE actively contributed to the launch of the One Health High Level Expert Panel (OHHLEP) at the initiative of France and Germany and alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The expert panel held its first meeting on 18-19 May 2021.

The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food reiterate their full support for the work of the OIE and wish Ms Monique Éloit every success for her new term.
