European Union – Refugees - Q&A - Excerpts from the daily press briefing (15.06.17)

Q - Following the 2015 EU agreement, France pledged to take 30,000 refugees. How many have you accepted as part of this agreement?

A - Two types of measures were adopted by the EU.

  • the emergency relocation of persons having arrived on EU territory - typically via Italy or Greece – in clear need of protection;
  • the resettlement in member states of refugees having arrived in third countries (Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq).

After the initial measure to resettle 22,000 refugees adopted by the Justice and Home Affairs Council on July 20, 2015, two decisions establishing emergency relocation mechanisms for 160,000 persons having arrived in Italy and Greece were adopted on September 14 and 22, 2015.
