European Union - Council Presidency (1 January 2017)

France warmly congratulates Slovakia on its first Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which has just ended.

Under difficult circumstances, the mobilization and proactive approach of the Slovakian Presidency enabled major progress to be made, including the adoption of the Bratislava Roadmap on the future of the European Union, the ratification by the European Union of the Paris Climate Agreement, the adoption of a growth-promoting budget for 2017 and the strengthening of external borders which allowed a European Corps of Border Guards to be set up.

France wishes Malta a very successful Presidency and will fully support its efforts to promote our shared priorities: internal and external security, growth and employment, and young people.

The first half of 2017 will see the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome in March and the opening of withdrawal negotiations with the United Kingdom.
