Jean-Marc Ayrault, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, will take part in the informal meeting of EU foreign ministers on April 28 hosted by the Maltese presidency.
This meeting will provide an opportunity for in-depth discussions between partners as well as the etablishment of contact with ministers of EU candidate countries.
The discussions will focus on the following points:
- Turkey: The ministers will take stock of developments in the situation and the various aspects of the relationship between the EU and Turkey, in a context marked by the constitutional referendum on April 16, the decision by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to impose a monitoring mechanism on Turkey and the new repressive measures taken by the Turkish authorities;
- Globalization and the challenges of the multilateral system: The discussions will focus on the key role of international organizations in regulating globalization, notably in the area of trade, and in promoting international peace and security and development;
- The EU’s overall strategy: There will be a review of the progress made since the meeting of the European Council in December 2016, notably in terms of revitalizing European defense. The efforts undertaken must be continued, especially with respect to financing.
