A high-level conference will be held on October 8 in Brussels on the refugees and migrants who are crossing the Balkans on their way to European Union countries.
It will include the member states, the countries of the Schengen area, the countries of the Western Balkans, Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon, as well as the European Commission and concerned European agencies (Europol, Frontex, and EASO, for support on asylum matters). The International Organization for Migration, the High Commissioner for Refugees, and the World Food Programme will also be represented.
This conference will focus on the following topics:
- support for countries of first asylum to keep the refugee situation from deteriorating
- operational support for the Balkan countries, particularly as winter approaches
- cooperative efforts to combat the trafficking of migrants by organized crime networks in the Balkans and countries of first asylum.
