European Union - Amélie de Montchalin’s participation in the Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels, 11 November 2019)

Amélie de Montchalin, Minister of State for European Affairs attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will take part in the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on November 11, during which the following issues will be addressed:

  • Afghanistan: The ministers will review the situation in this country against the backdrop of the Afghan presidential election and the prospect of a resumption of discussions between the Americans and the Taliban. France will reaffirm its support for strengthening the EU’s political role in the peace talks.
  • Iran / situation in the Gulf: The ministers will reaffirm the EU’s unity with respect to the Iranian issue and their attachment to the JCPOA. This meeting will also provide an opportunity to discuss the EU’s potential contribution to efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Gulf region.
  • Sudan: The ministers will have a discussion before having an informal meeting with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok. This exchange will provide an opportunity to express the EU’s concrete support for the political transition underway in this country.

The ministers will also exchange views on China, including with respect to developments in the situation in Hong Kong, following the high representative’s visit on October 24 and the state visit by President Macron. They will also discuss other international issues: Venezuela, a few days after the International Solidarity Conference on the Venezuelan Refugee and Migrant Crisis in Brussels (October 28 and 29); Libya, in order to reaffirm Europe’s collective commitment in support of a political solution; Iraq, in the context of the protest movements sweeping the country over the last few weeks; lastly, Turkey, in the wake of the conclusions adopted at the Foreign Affairs Council on October 14.
