Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna spoke on October 6 with Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for Internal Market, in charge of industry, digital, space, defense, audiovisual and tourism.

The minister and the commissioner lauded today’s adoption of the eighth package of European sanctions against Russia, following its illegal annexation of Ukrainian territories. They emphasized that these new measures represent a strong, united EU response to Russia.

The minister expressed France’s support for Commissioner Breton’s initiatives promoting a stronger, more sovereign Europe – among them, reducing dependence in strategic areas. She commended the European Commission for its efforts in this regard. The minister and the commissioner see eye to eye on the level of ambition that must be maintained to strengthen the European defense industry and build a more autonomous Europe.
