The European Social Charter, a Council of Europe treaty adopted in Turin on October 18, 1961, marks its 60th anniversary today. On this occasion, France reiterates its support for that historic, vibrant instrument of European social law. The Charter’s ambitious provisions helped significantly step up protection for social laws in its Member States, thereby helping to improve the lives of Europeans.

The Charter system has grown stronger over the years, notably through the guarantee of new social rights and the creation of a collective complaints mechanism. France reaffirms its commitment to all the Charter’s provisions and encourages all Council of Europe Member States to adhere to it fully. It supports efforts to further improve the effectiveness of these procedures in order to guarantee social protection for Europeans at the highest possible level.
