Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Jean-Marc Ayrault will take part in the Foreign Affairs Council on January 16.
The work will focus on:
- The Middle East peace process: The ministers will discuss the situation one day after the conference in Paris, the main results of which will be presented by Jean-Marc Ayrault. The EU has an important role to play, notably by proposing to the two parties a package of economic incentives to help them make progress toward the two-state solution.
- Syria: The ministers will take stock of the situation in Syria following the fall of Aleppo and the efforts to relaunch the political negotiations, especially those of the UN secretary-general’s special envoy. They will talk with the high representative about the contacts she has established, at the Council’s request, with the main regional actors. The ministers will reaffirm the principles that guide the EU’s commitment, notably the need to ensure that a credible political transition is underway, in accordance with UNSCR 2254, before the EU can contribute to reconstruction efforts in the country.
