France welcomes the appointment today of Marisol Touraine as chair of the Executive Board of UNITAID for a three-year term of office, following her unanimous election by the members of the Executive Board.

Marisol Touraine will bring her extensive experience to UNITAID, notably including her ministerial experience and her commitment to health care.

France, which is a founder country of and leading contributor to UNITAID - having contributed $1.7 billion since 2007 -, is committed to supporting this agency which spearheads innovation in global health; it invests in innovations to prevent, diagnose and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria more quickly, affordably and effectively, as well as to improve access to diagnosis and treatment of HIV co-infections. UNITAID therefore conducts recognized action in order to achieve the health-related Sustainable Development Goals, which is one of main priorities of France’s development policy.

UNITAID’s role is complementary to and critical to the work of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; France will host the Global Fund’s next Replenishment Conference in Lyon from October 9 to 10, 2019.
