Climate – Desertification – Twelfth Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (Ankara, October 12 to 24, 2015)

France welcomes the results of the twelfth Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, which took place in Ankara from October 12 to 24.

This meeting confirms the importance of this instrument in achieving the sustainable development goals adopted in New York in September. During the conference, the states underscored the key role of land and soil in responding to the three-fold challenge of food security, adaptation to climate disruption and the mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions. They called for the use of drought early warning systems in order to protect the most vulnerable populations.

During the Paris Climate Conference, France will launch two initiatives to support these efforts: the “4 for 1000: soil for food security and climate” initiative, aimed at developing agricultural research in order to improve the stocks of soil organic matter; and the “CREWS” initiative, which aims to provide all poor and vulnerable countries with systems for preventing natural disasters by 2020.
