Climate – Conference entitled “The Arctic as an early warning sentinel of climate change” (Paris, March 17, 2015)

On March 17, Laurent Fabius opened, together with his Norwegian counterpart, Borge Brende, the conference entitled “The Arctic as an early warning sentinel of climate change,” hosted by the Monaco Oceanographic Institute’s Maison des Océans in Paris. Leading French and Norwegian scientists and climate negotiators engaged in discussions with the public during the conference.

Prince Albert II of Monaco also participated in this event.

The conference followed on from the visit by Mr. Fabius together with Mr. Brende in July 2014 to the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard (Spitsbergen), an Arctic area that is on average warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. The purpose of the conference was to reaffirm the need to reach an ambitious agreement at the 2015 Paris Climate Conference. It also emphasized to civil societies and economic actors the urgent need for low-carbon development.
