Environment – France’s participation in Our Ocean conference (Malta, 5-6 October 2017)

The Our Ocean international conference is being held on October 5 and 6 in Malta, at the EU’s invitation.

The sustainable protection of the oceans is a crucial issue for France.

On this occasion, France will be represented by Brune Poirson, Minister of State attached to the Ministre d’Etat, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, who will present 21 commitments relating to the environment, maritime security, and the blue economy. We will also submit a draft charter on sustainable maritime transportation practices to the states attending the conference. As chair of the International Coral Reef Initiative, France will also propose jointly with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Prince of Wales Foundation a declaration of commitment on this subject.

Spearheaded by John Kerry, this international conference, which was first held in 2014, is an annual event. It brings together governments, scientists, companies, philanthropists, and NGOs from all over the world to discuss the main threats to the oceans, the measures to take, and the funding to be raised. France reiterates its unwavering commitment to the sustainable protection of the oceans, their biodiversity, and their ecosystems. In this regard, it applauds this year’s opening of the conference to issues of maritime security and the blue economy.
