Environment – Entry into force of Minamata Convention (18 May 2017)

France hails the entry into force of the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which will take effect on August 16, following the deposit of the 50th instrument of ratification on May 18.

The Minamata Convention aims to protect human health and the environment from highly toxic mercury releases and contains measures dealing with its entire life cycle (from extraction to storage).

The first international agreement in 12 years relating to chemicals and chemical waste, it represents a considerable step forward in the fight against pollution.

France, which was one of the convention’s first signatories, will deposit its instruments of ratification in the coming weeks and will attend the first conference of the parties in Geneva on September 24-29.
