Environment – Participation of Chrysoula Zacharopoulou in the Stockholm+50 summit (Stockholm, 3 Jun. 2022)

Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, is attending the Stockholm +50 summit taking place in the Swedish capital on June 2 and 3, ahead of World Environment Day on June 5.

Stockholm+50 marks 50 years of international environmental efforts under the auspices of the UN and the need for a multilateral approach to jointly tackle the planetary crises consisting of the climate, biodiversity and pollution.

This summit offers an opportunity to discuss major advances that have been made as well as upcoming deadlines with respect to the environment: the COP 15 on biodiversity and the COP 27 on the climate. As President Macron noted at the opening session of this event, France is determined to be one of the first countries to end its use of fossil fuels.

The Minister of State spoke with the environment ministers of Nigeria, Gabon, Colombia and several European countries. She had a meeting with the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, Ibrahim Thiaw, and the Deputy Director-General of the FAO, Maria Helena Semedo. She presented solutions and actions proposed by France and the EU that would enable us to jointly tackle major environmental challenges while encouraging systemic change with specific goals, such as swiftly moving to protect 30% of land and oceans.
