Environment – France joins a coalition to step up cooperative efforts on transboundary waters (8 December 2022)

Water will be one of the key challenges of the 21st century, whether politically, environmentally, in regard to the climate, or in relation to human development. France would like to see cooperation on transboundary waters, including aquifers, in order to ensure the sustainability of water resources for our societies. Over the past 15 years, we have invested more than €40 million in this area.

This was the message that France reiterated on December 8 at the UN-Water Summit on Groundwater, hosted by UNESCO. That occasion saw the launch of the Transboundary Water Cooperation Coalition; France is one of its founding members along with 30 governments and organizations, including Germany, Senegal and the World Bank. With water shortages steadily increasing in aquifers shared by several countries, this coalition aims to strengthen cooperation on transboundary waters ahead of the UN Water Conference, to be held in March 2023 in New York.
