Chrysoula Zacharopoulou, Minister of State for Development, Francophonie and International Partnerships, attached to the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, will be in Montreal on December 13 and 14 for the COP15. Given the threat of biodiversity loss by 2030, France and its European partners want to adopt ambitious, clear, quantitative goals as part of a future post-2020 global biodiversity strategy. France’s key goals include protecting at least 30% of land and 30% of the ocean by 2030, a goal we have already achieved at home. We are also committed to promoting agricultural practices that are compatible with protecting biodiversity.

France has made the preservation and sustainable management of forests a priority. For that reason, we applauded the December 5th adoption of a European regulation to combat imported deforestation, based on work conducted by the French EU Council presidency. At the COP15, the minister will therefore express our commitment to preparing the One Forest Summit, to be held in Libreville in 2023; that event was announced by the French and Gabonese presidents at the COP27. Together with the Gabonese environment minister, she will co-chair a ministerial meeting officially launching preparations for the One Forest summit and its three areas of focus: scientific cooperation, sustainability and innovative financing. Ms. Zacharopoulou will meet with the ministers of several key countries that play a major role in forestry cooperation.
