Yemen – Situation (05.12.17)

France is extremely concerned by the situation in Yemen. Clashes in Sanaa, which led to the death of former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, have further aggravated the situation. A lasting ceasefire must be swiftly instituted to avoid worsening the crisis.

Protecting local populations and civic infrastructures and providing complete, unconditional, unfettered access to humanitarian aid are obligations under international humanitarian law, and are incumbent upon all parties to the conflict. We demand that all parties abide by them.

France calls on the Yemeni parties to resume negotiations swiftly and without preconditions to achieve a lasting political solution to the crisis. It will reiterate its support for the effort being carried out to this end by UN Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed at consultations on Yemen today at the UN Security Council, which he will be attending. These consultations will help establish an initial assessment of the situation, which remains highly uncertain.
