Yemen – Armed clashes (January 21, 2015)

France is concerned by the armed clashes taking place in Yemen, and particularly in Sanaa.

As the UN Security Council emphasized yesterday, this violence must be ended as quickly as possible. We call for the immediate, unconditional release of the President’s chief of staff, Mr. Bin Mubarak. We also demand that the Houthi militias withdraw from the areas surrounding the presidential palace, the state television network, and all official buildings.

Together with its G10 partners, France reaffirms its support for President Hadi and the Yemeni government, protectors of the country’s unity and institutional continuity. It calls for the resumption of a construction dialogue as swiftly as possible between the parties, based on the peace agreement of September 21 and the conclusions of the National Dialogue Conference. France also believes that the swift adoption of a new constitution would represent a crucial step forward in the political transition process.
