Q - The President said yesterday that he wanted to consult with the governments of Latin America and Europe about how to avoid further escalation in Venezuela, including at the regional level. Is the Quai d’Orsay preparing initiatives?
A - As the President stated yesterday, the current crisis in Venezuela is troubling, “a dictatorship is attempting to survive at the cost of unprecedented humanitarian distress and troubling ideological radicalization, while that country’s resources remain considerable.”
As he suggested, we are currently considering the best way to support any initiative that would foster a credible, sincere, serious dialogue involving the countries of the region.
It is up to the Venezuelan authorities to swiftly provide guarantees on the rule of law and fundamental liberties. The EU and France will assess their relationship with Venezuela on that basis.
