Publication of the encyclical “Laudato Si” on the environment – Statement by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development and President of COP21 (June 18, 2015)

I welcome the publication of the encyclical “Laudato Si” by His Holiness Pope Francis, the Catholic Church’s first encyclical devoted to the environment.

Its title, taken from the writings of Saint Francis of Assisi, and its status – it is the highest-value document the Sovereign Pontiff can produce – testify to the importance the Pope attaches to protecting the environment.

In this decisive year for the fight against climate disruption, this unprecedented gesture will help strengthen the mobilization of the Christian community and, more generally, all citizens of the world who are sensitive to the Pope’s messages. So it is an important contribution to the success of COP21.
