United States - Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne attending IMF and World Bank meetings (Washington, April 19-21)
Minister of State Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne is attending the Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank on April 19 to 21.
He will present France’s new development strategy adopted this past February at the Inter-ministerial Committee for International Cooperation and Development (CICID). This strategy is based on three commitments:
- raising official development assistance to 0.55% of gross national income by 2022
- allocating it on a priority basis to the poorest, most vulnerable countries, particularly in Africa
- focusing on five areas: crises and vulnerabilities, climate change, education, gender equality, and health.
The minister will welcome the World Bank’s capital increase, which strengthens the role of this institution in the multilateral system and sends a positive signal for development.
He will meet with the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Mark Green, with whom he will discuss prospects for bilateral cooperation and the Sahel Alliance. He will also hold talks with representatives of the NGO InterAction on France’s strategy for responding to vulnerabilities and its humanitarian strategy.
The minister will chair a round table on promoting budgetary transparency; other participants will include the economy ministers of Mali, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and Burkina Faso. And he will take part in a round table on the demographic transition in sub-Saharan Africa and its effects on the potential for economic growth in the countries concerned.
During his trip, he will also meet with his counterparts to discuss trade tensions and risks to international cooperation, and will reaffirm France’s commitment to multilateralism.
