United States – Death penalty (20 April 2017)

France condemns the execution of Ledell Lee on April 20 in Arkansas and expresses its deep concern at the resumption of executions in this state which had not used the death penalty for 12 years.

France reaffirms its constant opposition to the death penalty everywhere and under all circumstances.

We urge the Arkansas authorities not to carry out the forthcoming executions that have been announced.

While there is growing support in the United States for a moratorium on executions and 19 states in the country have already abolished the death penalty, we urge all of the authorities concerned to put an end to executions and to launch a debate with a view toward the definitive abolition of the death penalty.
