France/United States – Departure of the Hermione for the United States (April 18, 2015)

On April 18, the Hermione will begin its Atlantic crossing, sailing first to the U.S. and Canadian coasts, and then on to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

A replica of the vessel in which the Marquis de Lafayette sailed in 1780 to join the revolutionaries during the American War of Independence, this ship is the culmination of a nearly 20-year project. It illustrates the historic friendship between our two countries and is designed to promote France’s attractiveness in the United States, particularly with respect to tourism.

Laurent Fabius had underscored the symbolic importance of this initiative during his meeting this past January with Erik Orsenna, president of the Hermione Foundation, and Benedict Donnelly, president of the Hermione-LaFayette Association.
