The French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, has been deeply moved and greatly saddened by the news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

France pays homage to her indefatigable sense of duty and her extraordinary service to the British people. Throughout her seventy-year reign, Her Majesty the Queen has embodied with authority and grace the continuity and unity of the British nation.

Travelling widely, she strengthened the bonds of friendship between peoples, and has been present at key historic moments over the past seven decades, whether it was the end of the Cold War or Apartheid or the establishment of peace in Northern Ireland.

France was fortunate to host her on numerous occasions, on both official and private visits, up to 2014 when she attended the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings. The French people have always held her in deep respect and great admiration. For many generations of French people she has exemplified British values and strength of spirit.

The Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs presents her most heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family and to the British people.
