Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian received his counterpart, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates, yesterday.
In the context of the global Covid-19 health crisis, the ministers expressed their support for strengthening bilateral cooperation.
They also addressed several regional issues of common interest. With respect to Libya, Jean-Yves Le Drian reiterated his appeal for the consolidation of the ceasefire, the relaunching of inter-Libyan political dialogue and the implementation of a transparent and equitable solution regarding the allocation of oil revenue. With respect to Iran, he underscored France’s attachment to the preservation of the JCPOA, Iran’s compliance with its obligations in this respect and realistic and effective solutions in the face of the prospect of the ending of the UN arms embargo. Lastly, the minister welcomed the signing of the agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, two key partners of France in the region. He underscored that the suspension of the annexation of the Palestinian Territories should become a definitive step and that the new momentum created by the normalization should make it possible to relaunch credible negotiations between the parties aimed at establishing two states within the framework of international law and the agreed parameters.
